Britney Spears
finishing off historic year
In
addition to winning female artist of the year honors
at last week's Billboard Music Awards, Britney Spears
also won the new artist of the year award, as well as
the female Hot 100 singles artist and female albums
artist of the year honors. Spears turned 18 Dec. 2 and
despite her young age, she's got the second
biggest-selling album of the year. The singer, who
made her national singing debut in 1989 on
television's "Star Search" when just 8 years
old, has always been mature for her age. "I think
because I surround myself with so many adults, I can't
help but feel a little bit older," she said.
The
teen will always remember 1999 as her breakthrough
year. This year she became the first solo artist ever
to have a No. 1 debut album and single on the
Billboard charts at the same time. Her debut album,
"Baby One More Time," received the Recording
Industry Association of America's Diamond Award in the
U.S. this year, selling more that 10 million copies
and making her the youngest artist ever to reach the
milestone. The album is currently holding strong at
No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart after 47 weeks on the
chart. "This year has been amazing," she
said. "I remember last year at this time I was
just excited because my single went gold. And now we
just found out it went diamond. So finally all this
hard work has really paid off and I just feel really
blessed and really thankful."

Britney,
who won four awards at the MTV Europe ceremony
two weeks ago and is just a few months older than William,

Spears takes top honours at YoungStar Awards
Britney
Spears picked up her first Hollywood Reporter

hefty competition: Christina Aguilera's self-titled
RCA debut, Hanson's "Live From Albertane"
and Jonny Lang's "Wander This World."
Although Spears was unable to attend because she is on
tour in Europe, the awards show didn't lack
representation from the music world. Jason Schwartzman,
a member of the band Phantom Planet, won a glass
trophy for best young actor or actress in a comedy
feature film for his role as Max Fischer in
"Rushmore." "It's cool," he said.
"I was a little nervous about going up against
the 'Big Daddy' twins."

performances from No Authority (who played "If
You Wanna Dance"), the Moffatts (who performed
"Misery"), country singer Traci Andrews (who

theater productions, TV movies and shows like
"Touched By An Angel." Actor Adam Wylie
("Picket Fences," "Hey Arnold!")
and singer-dancer Ginger Kinison ("Grease")
teamed up for a duet performance of "Jump, Jive
and Wail." "This is our audience, but they
are also our peers. They know what it is like to get
up early, have to travel a lot and be in front of
large audiences," says Scott Moffatt of the
Moffatts. The show was hosted by Melissa Joan Hart
("Sabrina the Teenage Witch") and Donny
Osmond.

Britney
Spears is considering adding movie star to her growing
list of teen queen credentials. Entertainment Weekly
reports that Spears is pondering the lead in
"Alice," a Y2K version of "Alice in

Alice first experiences Wonderland by following a
white rabbit, in the updated version Britney would
start by being hit by a white Rabbit - as in a

screenwriter Sarah Thorpe tells EW. According to
Spears' agent at this time the teen queen "is
considering the script but hasn't committed to it

SHANKS
& BIGFOOT VS BRITNEY SPEARS
UK
production duo Shanks & Bigfoot have revealed that
they are writing for Britney Spears' new album. Shanks
said: "It obviously won't be our traditional
2-step sound, but it will use our drum sounds,
orchestration and overall melodic feel."
Shanks
and his partner Danny Bigfoot recently won an award at
the Music of Black Origin - beating Fatboy Slim,
Basement Jaxx, Phats & Small and Armand Van Helden
- for best dance act. They have also had chart success
under their Doolally moniker with 'Straight From The
Heart'. Shanks also revealed that they have been
working on their own debut album and have a new single
coming out in December.
"With
our new work we want to make that connection between
the 2-step and R&B more explicit," Shanks
said. "We also have our sights set firmly on
America and will be working with other US acts."
'Sweet Like Chocolate' is to be released in America
next year.
2-step
is the name give to the bass-heavy sound where the
stress of the kick is on the offbeat. This sound is
best displayed by Shanks & Bigfoot's UK number one
'Sweet Like Chocolate'.
Shanks
& Bigfoot have also recorded a new single with US
vocalist Byron Stingily entitled 'How Could I Know?'
which is aimed mainly at clubs but could easily cross

Spears not likely to hit 'Dawson's Creek'
Britney
Spears has been making plans for an appearance on the
television series "Dawson's Creek" for some
time. Fans of the teen singing sensation are going to
have to wait even longer to see Spears pay a visit to
Capeside, according to producers of the show.
"Although both sides view her guest appearing on
'Dawson's Creek' as positive, a specific role has not
been created and nothing has been filmed," the
producers said in a statement. Meanwhile, Spears is
concentrating on her music and the 17-year-old singer
said that she is pleasantly surprised by all of the
attention she has received. "It is weird
sometimes," she said. "But it's a good
feeling to know that people really appreciate your
music and they're singing the words to your songs.
It's overwhelming - it's really the best feeling in
the world." Spears' debut album "Baby One
More Time" is currently at No. 10 after 37 weeks

Pop 101:
Academia takes on Britney Spears
At the annual
U.S. meeting of the International Association for the
Study of Popular Music, people took their pop
seriously. There was plenty of talk about Britney
Spears at the Sept. 30-Oct. 3 conference, held at
Middle Tennessee State University, where under the
conference heading "Don't Stop 'Til You Get
Enough: Consuming Popular Music." Nearly 80
presenters examined the contributions of artists
ranging from songwriter Bob Dylan and jazz
experimentalist Ornette Coleman to pop acts such as
TLC and Spears. Musicologist Melanie Lowe, an
assistant professor at Vanderbilt University, studied
two groups of girls, ages 12-14, and how they reacted
to young Spears' somewhat contradictory
sexy-yet-innocent school-girl persona. In her
conference paper, she explained that the girls reacted
negatively towards Spears when they couldn't reconcile
images that depicted her as simultaneously sexy and
childlike.
"Their
feminist conditioning was colliding with their
post-feminist culture," Lowe said of several teen
girls' reactions to Spears videos and photos.
"These girls are seeing right through what media
studies say is an influence," Lowe said later.
"They're much more sophisticated than you think
they are."

explains growth
Britney Spears
says that a growth spurt - not breast implants - has
contributed to her increased proportions. "When I
first signed with the record label we took a lot of
photos, and those were the pictures that got used. I
weighed 105 pounds and I weigh 130 now. I went through
a major growth spurt," Spears, 17, told the Oct.
9 issue of TV Guide. Spears, whose "Baby One More
Time" album has sold more than 5 million copies,
says the rumors bothered her for a while. "In
some interviews I would just start crying," she
says. "I'd be like, 'Why are you being so rude to
me?' After a while people stopped staying stuff. But
for a while it got really tough."

"I went though a MAJOR growth spurt," the

she continues, "but I would never do that."
Sources have told the New York Post, however, that
Britney did get breast implants. The pop diva is now
also denying that she's dating Boyz N' Girlz United's
Robbie Carrico; "I haven't run into anybody I
want to go out with". She also told the UK's Big

performance by former New Kid On The Block Joey
McIntyre, was taped for an upcoming TV special set to
air on the Disney Channel on Oct. 16. Spears told the
MTV Radio Network that she enjoyed her latest Disney
experience, but that the intricacies that go along
with taping a live performance for TV can get tedious.
"I'd much rather just go out and have, like,
thousands and thousands of fans, and just perform and
give it (my) all. And that's usually when your
performance comes out the best," Spears stated.
"Britney
