The RIAA has
corrected a statement it issued in conjunction with
its August album certifications. Britney Spears'
"Baby One More Time" (Jive) is now tied with
LeAnn Rimes' "Blue" (Curb) as the
best-selling album by a teenaged female vocalist. Both
albums have been certified for sales of 6 million;
Rimes' set hit that level in March.

Spears
stands up Boston fans
It's been a
rough week for teen queen Britney Spears. These days
she spends almost as much time explaining as she does
performing. Since Spears took the pop world by storm,
the media have tossed questions her way about breast
implants (which she has denied having), steamy Rolling
Stone cover photos, and her relationship with `N Sync
singer Justin Timberlake (she says they are just
friends). On Wednesday, Spears let down at least 1,000
fans at a Boston in-store autograph session at
Filene's, because she was in Memphis visiting none
other than Mr. Timberlake, according to the Boston
Herald. The paper reports that Spears planned to take
a commercial flight from Memphis to Boston to make her
appearance, but the flight was canceled due to
mechanical problems. To her credit, Spears did make
her scheduled performance in Boston at the BankBoston
Pavilion that evening. Spears' record label issued the
following statement on Thursday regarding her absence:
"Britney
Spears would like to send her deepest heartfelt
apologies to Filene's and the May Department Stores
Company, the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation and most
importantly her fans, for missing her scheduled
in-store event Wednesday in Boston. Britney
understands the importance of her fans and would never
intentionally set out to disappoint them. Plans to
reschedule her personal appearance or a similar event
are being organized and everyone will be notified as
soon as possible."
Meanwhile,
Spears is still scheduled to chat online with fans
live on ABC.com at abc.go.com,
at 6 p.m. ET, on Sept. 13. On Sept. 24, Spears will
guest-star on the season premiere of "Sabrina,
The Teenage Witch," as previously reported.

Britney
Spears top selling female teen
Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time" is now
the top-selling album by a teen-age female artist,
according to the Recording Industry Association of
America's August certifications. Spears' Jive debut,
now at 6 million units, leapfrogged LeAnn Rimes' 1996
Curb debut "Blue," which stands at 5 million
units. Another top teen group, Backstreet Boys, saw
their Jive set "Millennium" reach 7 million
units last month, tying it with 'N Sync's RCA debut as
the best-selling title of 1999 so far. Shania Twain's
1997 Mercury Nashville album "Come On Over"
arrived at 13 million; the set ties Whitney Houston's
1985 Arista debut as the No. 2 album by a female
artist. Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little
Pill" (Maverick/Sire, 1995) holds the top slot,
at 16 million units. Pearl Jam's 1991 disc
"Ten" jumped to the 11 million mark, making
the Epic set the top-selling album by an alternative
rock act. U2's "The Joshua Tree" (Island)
and Nirvana's "Nevermind" (DGC) are both at
the 10 million level.

Spears
fills teen bill in Cleveland
Britney
Spears wowed the teen-age population of Cleveland
during her performance at the Nautica Stage on Aug.
26. Even though her high energy set pleased the young
fans in attendance, her performance offered little to
suggest that the so-called "queen of teen"
won't vanish as quickly as she appeared on the pop
horizon.
Spears
kicked off her elaborately choreographed set with
"(You Drive Me) Crazy," and went through no
less than six costume changes throughout her
performance. Accompanied by a five-piece band, two
back-up vocalists and a co-ed troupe of dancers,
Spears sang most of the songs on her album, including
"Sometimes," "Soda Pop" and
"I Will Be There." Smattered throughout the
night's lineup were a handful of covers including an
over-the-top version of Journey's "Open
Arms," and Madonna's "Material Girl."
For Janet Jackson's "Nasty," she attempted
to further project the song's fierce attitude by
squeezing into a sexy, tight black leather outfit.
Spears,
whose voice was serviceable but not special, closed
the show with an encore of "...Baby One More
Time," and overall the sold out crowd of 4,100
fans would feel the night's performance was a valiant
effort by the current "queen of teen."
Spears will hit the SNET Oakdale Theatre in
Wallingford, Conn. on Sept. 3 and the Pier Six Concert
Pavilion in Baltimore on Sept. 4
